So this is the well-advertised gymnasium in our building. Located on the 23rd floor overlooking downtown Santiago, it at first seems like a nice concept - why not work out perched above a city with excellent views? But why don't I invite you to step closer and actually see what we're dealing with here?
For one, there are a total of 4 machines in this tiny room. And two of the machines are the same - "multipurpose" equipment that may have been designed for things like bench presses, arm curls, lat pull-downs, among other things. There really is no difference between the two machines, except the one on the left has a pulley system that is totally in a state of disrepair. So you can't do bench presses, you can't do arm curls, pull-downs, or even use the machine at all, except for maybe working your facial muscles into a frustrated frown. So I use the other machine, which is slightly better, except for the fact that when you do anything on it, it makes all sorts of rickety noises that make you think it'll either totally fall apart or spit out an Everlasting Gobstopper.
In spite of all this, I have twice successfully managed to do some semblance of a workout using this machine. However, as you will note, this area is in prime position to receive direct South American summer sunlight. Add this to the fact that it's got massive windows and no air conditioning. If global warming is not happening everywhere else, it sure is happening in this one room. All you fans of hot yoga and the like would probably enjoy this room, but for those of us who aren't trying to sweat off last night's Dulce de Leche cheesecake or cultivate that nice peely look of a 1st degree burn around the hairline, it certainly makes working out difficult.
...yet I suppose I wouldn't work out anyway if I weren't some sort of glutton for punishment at baseline, so - until next time, crazy hot rickety-machine gym!
....................Our Lovely Pool....................
What sits just outside this gymnasium that distresses Justin is the swimming pool, which delights me. There is a nice wooden deck for sunning and lets face it, when the water is at arctic temps that's basically what you're going to do! I mean, I'm a fan of cold pool water but this water is too cold even for me (not for some brave Chileans though). I can't help but wonder how a pool in full sun all day on the 23rd floor in Chile manages to stay ice cold. I did enjoy a brief dip and reading on the deck and plan on making it out there again!
Bet you won't complain about the gym at Bristol again. Sounds like the pool area is nice except for the polar bear water. Despite that it seems like a nice retreat.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha. We dream about cold pools in summer time. We still think that the pool water in Alabama is too warm. I am not going to tell you how is to swim in the Chilean ocean, but you can try (1 hour driving from Santiago) if you are brave enough
